Evangelical Reflections - Thursday of the 2nd Week of Lent - March 4, 2021

Thursday of the 2nd week of Lent
Today’s Gospel gives us some more harsh words from Jesus. And by “harsh”, I mean difficult to swallow and we better get the message that He’s trying to give us.
It’s the story of the rich man and Lazarus. Lazarus is poor and sits outside of the rich man’s house and the rich man passes Lazarus everyday without a thought or care for him. He does not give him anything to eat or drink, he does not help him in any way. This rich man ends up in Hell after he dies. He enjoyed all of the earthly pleasures and thought only of himself while he was alive. He did not heed the words of God when He said, “to whom much is given, much will be required”.
It’s not wrong or sinful to be rich or have good things in life. The wrong and sinful part comes in when we live only for ourselves, when we don’t use the good things that God has given us to help and take care of others. Life is not meant to be about us, it’s meant to be about God and our brothers and sisters. Imagine how different life could’ve been for the rich man had he paid any attention to Lazarus. He and Lazarus could’ve been in Heaven together, rejoicing together, loving God together, if only he had thought of someone other than himself and took care of his brother.
Throughout all of the Gospels, Jesus makes it very clear what we need to do to inherit eternal life: love God and love our neighbor. We need to make sure that we have a daily prayer life and partake in the sacraments often and then we need to go out and love our neighbors.
Who in my life needs the love of Christ? My homeless neighbor, my depressed neighbor, my anxious neighbor, my addicted neighbor, my marginalized neighbor, my sick neighbor and so on and so forth.
Life begins when we step out of our comfort zones and radically love God and one another. Let’s begin life together today.
