Evangelical Reflections - Friday of the 2nd Week of Lent - March 5, 2021

Friday of the 2nd week of Lent
Upon first glance at the Gospel for today, I kind of stared off into the distance and thought to myself “ok… and the point is?” I needed the Holy Spirit’s help on this one (and He came through as He always does).
Jesus was telling this parable to let the Pharisees and others who did not believe in Him yet that He indeed was the Son of God and that to not believe this was going to be an issue, to say the least. The Pharisees did not listen to the prophets before Jesus (the servants) and they did not listen now to Jesus (the son of the owner). The Kingdom was going to be taken from them.
What does this mean for our lives today? Well, how many times does Jesus speak to us through other people, through events in our lives, through our encounters with Him in the sacraments, and we don’t listen? Hopefully we’re not physically killing anyone like the bad tenants, but do we just dismiss what someone says to us and then turn around and say, “God never speaks to me!”?
Are our hearts and minds closed to what God is saying to us, either because our hearts have become hardened or because we are not taking the time to be quiet and still enough to hear? Jesus is always speaking to us, He is always coming after our hearts. After all, that’s all that He wants. Are we turning Him away when He comes?
Let us take time today to slow down, to be still and to listen for the voice of God speaking to our hearts, that we may not miss Him or His Kingdom.
