Evangelical Reflections - Friday of the First Week of Lent - February 26, 2021

Friday of the 1st Week of Lent
Matthew 5:20-26
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is teaching us more about our relationship between God, ourselves and our neighbor. Jesus tells us that if we are angry or have a grudge against our brother or sister that we should not even approach the altar until we have resolved that issue.
When Jesus speaks on our we are to treat our neighbor, we should listen. He is not mincing words in this Gospel reading. How can we approach the altar of our Lord, and yet have hate in our hearts for another person? It’s just not possible.
It’s a normal part of life that people are going to hurt us and we are going to hurt others; there’s no way of getting around that.
But the question is, how are we to respond to that?
When we hurt someone, we should genuinely try to apologize and to make it right. When someone hurts us, we should genuinely try to forgive them; and if they don’t want to hear about our forgiveness, at least we can forgive them in our hearts.
We cannot claim to love God, but not love the beloved sons and daughters that He has created.
This Lent, let us take time to think about who we have hurt and who has hurt us and where we still have unforgiveness in our lives.
Let us pray and ask God to give us the grace that we need to be forgiven and to forgive. Let us ask God to help us see each person the way that He sees them: as precious and beloved. And let our hearts conform with His.
