February 22 - Monday of the First Week of Lent
Today is the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter. But is isn’t really about a chair. It’s when Simon became Peter.
I’m about to type a word that no one really likes and you may cringe, but hang in here with me: obedience. 😳
Yep, obedience. It’s a word that used to make me roll my eyes as a kid and if I got caught rolling my eyes, I would quickly learn the meaning of that word. (Love you, Mom and Dad).
Today we celebrate the feast of the Chair of St. Peter and I used to think we were celebrating a physical chair but I also learned that’s not the case.
What we are celebrating today is the authority that Christ gives to St. Peter, to be His representative here on earth. This authority is passed down from St. Peter, our first pope, all the way through history to today with Pope Francis.
The root of the word “obey” in Latin means “in the direction of” or to “hear”. As Catholics, we are called to respect the authority of the Pope because we believe his authority comes from Jesus Christ and we obey that authority.
So, what does this mean in our life? First, we should pray everyday for our Holy Father. Second, when the Pope says something, we should pay attention. The best things to read from the Pope are encyclicals and other Papal writings.
You can always find them for free at www.Vatican.va. We should read these, pray through them and trust that they are inspired words of the Holy Spirit.
Let us keep Pope Francis in our prayers and thank God that He has not left us as sheep without a shepherd. And let us obey the words of our Holy Father, just as we would our earthly and Heavenly Father.
