February 21 - First Sunday of Lent
Have you ever watched one of those survivalist shows, where one person goes out into the wilderness and has to survive for as long as they can?
I watch those shows in awe and think, “nope, no way in a million years. I love electricity, 4 walls and not having to kill my food before I eat it”.
When Jesus went out into the desert for 40 days, I’m sure he had to endure some of the same trials that people today on those shows have to deal with; he would have had to suffer through the weather, try to not get killed by a wild animal, etc. But Jesus had a greater purpose for going out into the desert. He wasn’t trying to survive for money or views on TV.
The Gospel says that “the Spirit drove Jesus” into the desert. The Holy Spirit was calling on Jesus to go and to disconnect from all material comforts, including food and water. Why was this?
Jesus was about to begin His public ministry. He was about to embark on the mission of why He came to this earth and for that, He needed to be alone with God and to be strengthened for His work.
We ourselves need time away from all that distracts us and keeps us busy from being with the Lord. That’s why the Church, in Her Wisdom, gives us these 40 days to refocus, recharge, and get the things out of our lives that don’t get us closer to God and to our mission of bringing others to Him.
This Lent, whether we have already failed in our sacrifices or haven’t even begun, let us together go into the desert with Jesus, and there, find Him and come alive at the end of these 40 days with the greatest gift of all: the Resurrection.
