Evangelical Reflections - Friday of the 3rd Week of Lent - March 12, 2021

Friday of the 3rd week of Lent
“If it wasn’t for people, I’d be holy”.
I heard that once as quoted from a saint and of course I can’t find which saint that was anymore. But that quote has always stuck with me.
Today Jesus tells us that the Greatest Commandment is to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. For me, I think it’s pretty easy to love God, at least in theory. He’s all good, all powerful, all knowing, all loving, etc. It would be very difficult to not love someone like that.
The second part is where I get tripped up: to love my neighbor as I love myself. Big yikes. How many times do I think in a day how much more I deserve than the next person? How often do I lash out at others but then get angry when someone lashes out at me? The examples could go on, ad infinitum.
What we have to grasp is that loving God and loving our neighbor are intertwined with one another; we can’t separate one from the other. To love God is to love our neighbor and to love our neighbor is to love God. Why is this? Because each and every person is God’s creation, made in His image and likeness. It gladdens His heart to see His children loving one another.
If we love our neighbor, then we have to love God. He is the one who made us all. We wouldn’t have each other without Him. We wouldn’t exist without Him. The goodness that we see in our neighbor is just a glimpse of the goodness of God.
If I claim to love God but I don’t love my neighbor, I don’t love God. If I claim to love my neighbor but don’t love God, I don’t love my neighbor.
Where in my life do I need to get and do better? This is God’s design for living for us, so that we live life to the full and more abundantly. Spend some time today thinking and praying about where I need the love of Christ to expand my heart so that I am overflowing with His joy.
