Evangelical Reflections - Wednesday of the First Week of Lent, February 24, 2021

Wednesday of the 1st Week of Lent
Luke 11:29-32
Signs... this note was found lying in the grass in front of the church.
I’m sure we’ve all uttered this prayer once or twice in our lives: “God, if you want me to do this, just show me a sign”.
When we had a big decision to make, or we weren’t sure of an outcome of our actions, we’ve said to God, just show me a sign and I’ll do it.
Sometimes He does give us signs. They may be obvious or they may be subtle. He may speak to us through other people or things.
In today’s Gospel, the Jews were asking Jesus for a sign so that they would know that He was the Messiah. He doesn’t show them a sign, though. Why? Because He is the ultimate Sign. He is God Incarnate, walking among them. He goes on to talk about Jonah and the Ninevites and Queen Sheba and Solomon. The Ninevites and the Queen repented when they heard the words of the prophets and Jesus is telling them that He is greater than both Jonah and Solomon; yet, they still do not believe.
God is always working in our lives. He is always “working things together for our good” (Romans 8:28) for those who love Him. If we are daily communicating with Him, daily seeking after His heart, we will have no need for signs.
The ultimate will of God is for us to know and love Him. Whatever we do in our lives should always be seeking that end, to know and love God. We can know that something is not right in our lives if it does not get us closer to Him.
As we continue our Lenten journeys, let our goal each day be to know the heart of Jesus a little bit better. In knowing Him, we will know the plan for our lives, one day at a time.
