February 18 - Thursday after Ash Wednesday
Imagine for a moment that you got everything that you ever wanted out of life: all of the money you could ever need, the house, the car(s), good health, the family, the education, the dream job, etc. You have it all, you did it, you have achieved the “American dream”.
Now imagine how would feel having everything you dreamed of having; what do you feel? Satisfaction? Happiness? Maybe for a while, life may seem pretty easy. Do you think you may get bored? What if something happened that you couldn’t control, such as a loved one getting sick? Would everything that you have be able to solve any of those problems?
For a time, we may be able to “hold on”. Certainly endless amounts of money may fix some problems. But the thing about life is that difficulties come and always will. The question is, what will I do when those difficulties arise?
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that in order to follow Him, we must “take up our cross daily” and that we must die to ourselves in order to find true life. We may wonder why a loving God would want us to carry heavy burdens and not do what we want to do. Isn’t life supposed to be fun??
God’s wisdom is so much greater and higher than our human wisdom; He knows that when we face trials that it is an opportunity for us to turn toward Him. Sometimes He may take the burden from us, or He may just walk beside us and help us to carry that cross, to let us know that He loves us and will never leave us.
When we turn from ourselves and look to see what God wants us to do, to see what help our neighbor needs, in that will we find true fulfillment that our soul longs for. In that dying to self, we will find the true meaning of life. Whether we are rich or poor, if our life is more than the material things around us, if it is about God and our neighbor, then we can joyfully pick up our daily crosses that are laid at our feet. This Lent, let us lean into the cross, knowing that Jesus is right next to us and will never allow us to fall.
