The Altar Rail, Part 5

The Altar Rail, Part 5

As we continue our catechesis on the altar rail, we can consider the beautiful diversity that we experience here at St. Mark. By using the Communion rail, whether you choose to kneel or stand, we preserve in the parish a universal and ancient tradition of the Church while still respecting the current permission in the United States to receive Communion in the hand while standing. While sources show us that in a few dioceses in the early Church the faithful received Communion in the palm of their hand, by the 5th Century, the Church consolidated its practice to receiving Communion on the tongue. This change in custom was to prevent any particles of the Blessed Sacrament falling to the ground, and to increase among the faithful a devotion to Jesus’ Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist. Whether the faithful choose to kneel or stand at the rail, it is a wonderful experience for all that the whole parish community is reverent and respectful at such a solemn moment of the Eucharistic sacrifice.
