Confirmation Preparation FAQ

Sacrament of Confirmation Preparation

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is EDGE?
Meeting Times: September - May
Sunday 9:15-10:30 am, Sunday 3:15-4:30 pm, Sunday 6:15-7:30 pm, or Monday 6:15-7:30 pm

EDGE is a Catholic middle school Youth Ministry program. It provides a safe fun place for youth to find solid Catholic community, to get answers to their questions about faith and, most importantly, to experience Jesus in a profound and personal way. EDGE resources speak to the physical, psychological, cognitive, relational, and spiritual maturation of middle school youth. To learn more, please visit

What is Fraternus/Fidelis?
Meeting Time: Wednesday, 7:00-8:45 pm (Mass 6:30-7:00 pm) with year-round activities

Fraternus (men) and Fidelis (ladies) is a middle and high school Youth Ministry program to help young men and women grow in Catholic virtue through adult mentorship. Each night incorporates dinner, fun, a media clip, large group message, small group discussion, and prayer. Both programs have year-round activities including camps, excursions and enrollment/accolade ceremonies.

Are the programs co-ed?
EDGE provides a co-ed experience. Fraternus and Fidelis separate men and women to encourage a deeper exploration of the virtues.

Which program do I register my child for?
Students who do not receive catechesis within their school setting (public, charter, or private non-Catholic school students) must participate in Edge.  Students receiving Catholic religious education in their school setting (Catholic school students and homeschool students) can register for either Edge or Fraternus/Fidelis.  Of course, all 6-8 grade students are welcome to, and many chose to, participate in both programs.

Our family is new to St. Mark Catholic Church and our children participated in/did not participate in Youth Ministry at another parish?
Welcome to St. Mark! You will register your children for either EDGE and/or Fraternus/Fidelis, and we will ensure that they are enrolled with their grade year. If your children participated in Youth Ministry at another parish, you may indicate that on their registration or email Emily Hogan at  Regardless of the year your child begins Edge and/or Fraternus/Fidelis, they will complete 3 years of youth ministry prior to receiving the sacrament of Confirmation.

Does EDGE or Fraternus/Fidelis provide meals?
Because Fraternus and Fidelis immediately follow 6:30 pm Mass on Wednesday, these two programs provide dinner. Students will not receive a meal during EDGE.

Why aren’t our friends’ children at another parish required to attend Fidelis/Fraternus or EDGE?
The Diocese of Charlotte sets standards for Sacrament of Confirmation preparation; however, each parish creates its own Sacrament of Confirmation preparation program consistent with those standards.

What if my son or daughter is ill and cannot attend EDGE or Fraternus/Fidelis?
We understand that children get ill. If you wish to inform someone of your child’s absence, please email Emily Hogan at

What if I am not a parishioner at St. Mark Catholic Church?
Every parish in the Diocese of Charlotte has Youth Ministry programs in preparation for Confirmation. If you are not a parishioner of St. Mark Catholic Church, please contact your respective parish to inquire about their requirements. If you are not a parishioner of St. Mark Catholic Church but wish to be confirmed at St. Mark, you must complete your respective parish’s Sacramental Preparation Program and request that your pastor submit a letter to Fr. John Putnam.

What is the cost for Sacrament of Confirmation preparation? How do I register?
EDGE: $75  (Note: If participating in Edge, some fees will be refunded for Core Team Members)
Fraternus/Fidelis: $100
Sacrament Fee (8th Grade only): $50

What does my family do if we cannot afford the registration fee?
Scholarships are available for both Fraternus/Fidelis and EDGE. Please contact Theresa Benson, Director of Religious Education, at, Betsy Hoyt, Fidelis Lead Lady, at, or Craig Hoyt, Fraternus Commander, at, for more information.

What does the registration fee cover?
The EDGE fee covers materials for the program. Fraternus/Fidelis registration fee covers educational materials, meals, and national organization fees, among other miscellaneous expenses. The sacrament fee covers the retreat, Confirmation preparation materials, and the Confirmation Mass and Reception, as well as other expenses.

How do I volunteer to be a Core Team Member for EDGE?
Many adults are needed for sacramental preparation and we are dependent upon parents to help. Please contact Emily Hogan if you can help: Some registration fees will be refunded for Core Team members.

How do I volunteer to be a catechist/volunteer for Fraternus/Fidelis?
Adult volunteers for the Fraternus/Fidelis program are considered mentors. In both programs, the adults also form their own brotherhood and sisterhood. Because of the unique nature of this program, we cannot waive the fee.

Do my children attend Mass in addition to EDGE and/or Fraternus/Fidelis?
Yes. All children should attend Mass with their families on Sundays.  Mass on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm is encouraged for children participating in Fraternus/Fidelis but not required.

What if my child does not participate in the Sacrament of Confirmation preparation at this time?
St. Mark offers catechesis throughout a person’s entire life. Youth and teens that do not receive their Sacrament of Confirmation (or Holy Communion) at the “traditional” time need not worry. Each year we offer Faith Formation classes for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) and the Right of Initiation of Adults (RCIA.).  Please click here for complete details.
